Map to start point:
Our transport will pick us up from Dursley and take us to the Sharpness Viewpoint. From here we will have views of the Docks, Locks and the old pier jutting out into the Severn. We start our walk along the side of the Severn on the Flood Defences. As we approach the Berkeley Pill we move inland to the historic village of Berkeley. We walk through the picturesque high street and visit the Church. We leave the village across the fields, looking back at Berkeley Castle, across the first part of the Berkeley Vale to Newport. Carefully crossing the A38 we continue across the fields of the second part of the Berkeley Vale crossing under the Railway and Motorway. We rise up through Stinchcombe passing the historic Manor House and Church. We enter the grounds of Piers Court where Evelyn Waugh once resided, the author of Brideshead Revisited. We stroll through the estate woods and out across the fields again to meet the Wotton Road. Carefully crossing the road we pass around the bottom of Drakestone Point and on to Stancombe to join the Cotswold Way. We climb up and over Stinchcombe Hill and down through the woods back to Dursley.
A great chance along the walk to have wonderful views across Sharpness Docks, The Severn, Forest of Dean and the Welsh Mountains beyond. The historic Town of Berkeley with its Church and Castle and Stinchcombe warrants further investigation.
Bring a hat for the blowy path along the Severn!
Dursley Welcomes Walkers is funding the coach to enable everyone to access a fine linear walk during the festival.
