Map to start point:
Starting at Dursley Bus Station, first, a bus journey to Shortwood NT car park (GL6 6PP) near Haresfield Topograph, where we alight. The walk then proceeds along the Cotswold Way south through Standish Wood, passing Randwick and Westrip.
Crossing the railway line east of Stonehouse, then Ebley Road and the Stroudwater Canal at Ryeford, there is a major road crossing (A419 Ryeford) and on to Kings Stanley and Leonard Stanley. Leaving the villages, a strenuous ascent to resume the Cotswold Way in Stanley Wood, passing Nympsfield long barrow towards Coaley Peak Nature Reserve.
Continuing the Cotswold Way to Coaley Wood viewpoint, there follows a steep descent past Hodgecombe Farm and equally steep ascent to Cam Long Down and Cam Peak, before the final leg (gentle descent!) back to Dursley.
Standish Wood comprises an ancient woodland with a wealth of archaeological features including long and round barrows, a hill fort and cross dyke; historical monuments over 3,000 years old. The Stroudwater Canal is currently undergoing extensive improvements as part of works to join this canal to the Sharpness-Gloucester canal at Saul Junction by late 2024. The walk passes over the architecturally interesting Ryeford Bridge. Coaley Peak Nature Reserve has extensive views towards the River Severn, as well as the Brecon Beacons and the Severn Crossings (weather permitting!), as well as hosting the Nympsfield Long Barrow. Cam Long Down and Cam Peak also allow further views towards the Severn, Brecon Beacons to the west; and, in addition, Uley Bury and Downham Hill (“Smallpox Hill”) to the east.
Walking poles advisable for the steep sections.

Dogs are not permitted on the walk, except for registered assistance dogs. This is for the comfort and safety of all the walkers in the group.

Accommodation
If you need somewhere to stay during the festival, contact the Ashen Plains campsite. They have pitches for tents and caravans and also shepherd hut style accommodation.

Our goal is to provide a free walking festival for the local community and visitors to our beautiful countryside. We also work on projects throughout the year to improve access to walking activities.
